December 1, 2013 – Strong Earthquake Strikes Indonesia: A 6.4 magnitude quake struck Indonesia (see map). The quake hit the southeast portion of the country. The map shows all earthquakes that struck the globe the first five and one-half hours of December 1st.
Red dots indicate quakes that hit during the last hour. The size of the dots characterizes the strength of the quakes. The larger the dot the stronger the quake.
Below, is a close-up of the region where the quake occurred:
Indonesia is home to one of the largest and most destruction quakes of the twenty-first century. The December 26, 2004 – 9.1 magnitude mega-quake and tsunami killed 250,000 world-wide. The orange dot just SSW of Kuala Lumpur is very close to the epicenter of this monster quake. Let us hope that these two quakes today are not a precursor to something larger. (Credits – USGS).
