June 8, 2013 – “I’d Rather be Dead than Here:” So said a prisoner at one of Latin America‘s notoriously over crowed prisons. The grisly prison conditions in Latin America (and South America) are responsible for 360 that were killed in a fire in Honduras and 44 killed in a massacre in Mexico, just to name two events out of hundreds. El Salvador has 19 prisons, that were built to hold a population of 8,000; that are currently holding 24,000. Their is so much crime in Latin America that citizens favor arrests and jail time over prosecution. The majority of prisoners are awaiting trial – some as long as 12 years.
