Global Earthquakes from 1973 to 2013 – by Year.

April 18, 2013 Global Earthquakes by Year: I download all global earthquakes greater than or equal to (>=) 6.0 magnitude; from January 1, 1973 to April 18, 2013. The results are graphed above.

As you can see, the results are inconstant from year to year. Why are there fewer quakes from 1973 to 1982? Perhaps part of the answer is that there were fewer global reporting stations in the 1970’s? On the other hand, fewer quakes were experienced in 2012 and 2013, after peaking in 2011. Does this mean that the number of global earthquakes is decreasing? From looking at the graph I would say no. The number of quakes dropped for a year or two, only to increase in subsequent years.

Continued analysis needs to be performed relative to this question.
