April 13, 2013 – Earthquakes and Solar Eclipses: The graphs above reflect 40 years of Solar Eclipses (1973 to 2013) and the quantity and power of quakes occurring 15 days before and after those eclipses. A total of 978 earthquakes are distributed on the top graph, with a total of 86 Solar Eclipses. The power of those quakes is shown on the bottom graph. For example, on the day of the eclipse (0) there were a total of 24 quakes (a low number and the power of those 24 quakes was 56 (the low on the power scale).
The “X” axis on both graphs is the same. The -15, on the lower left of both graphs, is 15 days before the solar eclipses. The zero (0) is the day of the eclipses and +15 is 15 days after the eclipses. The quantity of earthquakes is shown on the top graph, while the power of those quakes is shown on the bottom graph. Earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.0 or greater are shown.
‘1. There is a big difference between the quantity and power of earthquakes on any given day. For example, the number of quakes occurring one day +/- the eclipse (-1, 0 and +1) is low at 24 each day. However, the cumulative power of those quakes is very large on day +1 (475).
‘2. Day -5 has the highest number of earthquakes at 50. However, the power of those quakes is fairly low at 173.
‘3. The white horizontal line on both graphs is an exponential best fit line. The quantity best fit line is about horizontal. However, the power best fit line slopes downward from left to right. In other words, more powerful earthquakes occur before an eclipse than after.
‘4. The most powerful earthquakes occur on day -11 (eleven days before the eclipse). The highest quantity of quakes occurs on day -5 (five days before the eclipse).
‘5. In summary: On average very powerful earthquakes occur 11 days before the Solar Eclipse, a swarm of aftershocks strike the next day (-10) and day -5, a quiet period occurs from day -4 to +1, then very powerful quakes hit the two days after the eclipse.
The next Solar Eclipse occurs on May 9, 2013. Therefore, expect powerful earthquakes on April 28th and May 10th and 11th.
