February 15, 2013 – Meteorite Hits Russia, Causing Panic: Amateur videos broadcast on state television showed an object streaking across the sky around 9:20 a.m. local time before bursting into a fireball. Residents in the city of Chelyabinsk, the largest in the affected region, described a shock wave from the meteorite that blew in doors and smashed glass.
Pictured above, a meteorite contrail was seen over Chelyabinsk, Russia, on Friday. The meteor streaked across the sky of Russia’s Ural‘s causing explosions and reportedly injuring around 1,000 people.
The meteorite is seen in this screen grab from a video recorded with a dashboard camera on a highway between Kostanay, Kazakhstan, and the Chelyabinsk region in Russia. The explosion is clearly visible – which caused the damage to the city as the shock wave spread out from the meteor.
It seems awfully coincidental that this meteor hit when 2012 DA14 was approaching. My fear is that 2012 DA14 will hit orbiting satellites and cause significant damage on the ground.
