A 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake Struck in Southwestern Siberia, Russia.

February 26, 2012 – A 6.7 Magnitude Quake Struck in Siberia, Russia: The powerful tremor hit at 1:17PM at the epicenter, at a depth of 11 kilometers (7 miles). This sparsely populated region of southwestern Siberia, contains mostly mountains and forests, with the closest town being Kyzyl, Russia; which was 62 miles east of the quake (see map).
Additionally, the quake was 209 miles northeast of Ulaangom, Mongolia; 233 miles southeast of Abakan, Russia; 554 miles WNW of Ulaabaatar, Mongolia (the capital) and 2,335 miles ENE of Moscow, Russia (the capital).
Mongolia is the 18th largest country in the world, with an average altitude of 1,580 meters (5,182 feet) and features a very low population density at 1.5 inhabitants per one square kilometer (0.6 square miles). The total population of Mongolia is 2.3 million.
Since 1973, their have been 350 earthquakes, greater than or equal to (>=) 7.0 magnitude. Russia saw 24 of those quakes. First was Indonesia with 38, second Japan with 37, third the United States with 28 (most of which were in and around Alaska) and tied for fourth with Russia was Mexico with 24.
The quake struck at 1:17AM in New York, 12:17AM in Chicago, 11:17PM (Feb. 25th) in Denver and 10:17PM in Los Angeles.
The fact that their were several earthquakes between 5.0 and 5.9 magnitude on the same day is not unusual. The USGS stated that from 1900 to 2011, on average, their are 1,319 quakes between 5.0 and 5.9M; which is 3.6 per day. Further, their were 134 per year (11.2 per month) during the same analysis.
The last earthquake >= 7.0M, that occurred in Russia, was on January 15, 2009 in the Kirul Islands in far eastern Russia and was a 7.4M event. This is where most of Russia’s earthquakes occur; the Kirul Islands and the Kamchatka Peninsula.
Due to the shallow nature of today’s quake, and the sparse population in the region; little if any damage to people or prosperity is expected.
