October 13, 2011 – A 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Struck Near Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia: At least 50 people were injured when a strong earthquake shook Bali this morning; at 11:16AM near the epicenter. The 6.0 quake caused widespread panic on the Indonesian resort island, and witnesses say the roofs of some homes collapsed. The quake was centered 62 miles southwest of Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia (see map). It was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami, but it was felt on islands hundreds of miles away. It hit the day after the island had marked the anniversary of the terrorist bombings that killed 202 people nine years ago. In the islands main tourist areas, visitors say they were told to run for their lives as cracks began to appear in buildings. A tourist from California says the quake was unlike any she had felt in her home state. “It started at my feet and went all though my heart and head – it made me nauseous;” she said. “My first reaction was to get out of the house. I was very confused when the roof started shaking; it was really frightening.”
The quake struck at a depth of 35 kilometers (22 miles). It was 100 miles west of Mataram, Lombok, Indonesia and 585 miles ESE of Jakarta, Indonesia.
Due to the International Date Line, the tremor occurred at 11:16PM (October 12th) in New York, 10:16PM in Chicago, 9:16PM in Denver and 8:16PM in Los Angeles.
