A 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Struck the South Pacific Ocean Near Tonga.

September 23, 2011 – A 6.2 Magnitude (M) Earthquake (EQ) Struck Near Tonga in the South Pacific: The quake occurred on Sept. 23rd at 12:07PM, near the epicenter, at a depth of 8 kilometers (5 miles). No tsunami warnings or watches were in affect.
This region, of the South Pacific, has seen 34 EQs of magnitude 7.0 or greater over the last 40 years. Four occurred in 2011 alone. On August 20th two EQs hit Vanuatu (see map) only an hour and 26 minutes apart (7.1M & 7.0M). Another struck near Vanuatu on Sept. 3rd (7.0M). The most recent hit Fiji on Sept. 15th (7.2M). Tonga and Samoa are particularly close to the Pacific Ring of Fire, however, the whole region is EQ prone.
