A 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Struck Near the North Coast of New Guinea.

September 13, 2011 – A 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Struck Near the North Coast of New Guinea: The quake occurred at 8:44AM at the epicenter, at a depth of 34 kilometers (21 miles). No tsunami warnings were in affect.
The tremor took place 27 miles ESE of Wewak, New Guinea; 150 miles north of Mount Hagen, New Guinea, 164 miles north-west of Madang, New Guinea; and 455 miles NNW of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG – see map).
Mount Hagen, named after the German officer Curt Von Hagen, at 12,385 feet, is the second highest volcano in PNG. The volcano is situated 15 miles north-west of the city of Mount Hagen. The city is PNG’s third largest.
The country of Indonesia is located on an extremely active juncture of the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” Out of 353 earthquakes greater than magnitude 6.9, since 1973, 43 (12.2%) have occurred in Indonesia. Two of those occurred in this same area (Near the North Coast of New Guinea) on the same day, less than three hours apart. January 3, 2009 saw a 7.6M and 2 hours and 50 minutes later, a 7.3M.
