Cooper Station Nuclear Reactor Safe for Now!

The Cooper Station Nuclear Reactor at Brownville, Nebraska is holding for now, as operators hope for the best and prepare for the worst. The flood control berms (8 feet high and 2,000 feet long), that surround the planet, are in good shape and inspected hourly for leaks and weak spots. The planet is still running and cooling water needs to be circulated to the radio-active rods. Even if the planet were not running, water needs to circulate through the radio-active rods to cool them. That was the problem in Japan, as the tsunami cut off power and water could no longer cool the rods.
Even though the plant is still connected to the electrical grid, planet operators fired up the diesel generators and brought in extra diesel fuel. They, also, have additional diesel fuel supplies to keep things cool. Additionally, they are in constant contact with Federal Officials and monitor the water levels 24/7 to ensure safety. At Cooper on Sunday, plant officials led Gregory B. Jaczko, the N.R.C. chairman, on a tour, past thousands of feet of new berms and buildings where every doorway was barricaded with four-foot-high water barriers that are intended to survive even if an earthquake hits during a flood. Mr. Jaczko also toured the building that holds the diesel generators, which would supply vital electricity if the water knocked out the power grid.
Even though this is a disaster blog, I’m a pragmatist and when there is little likelihood of a disaster – – I say so. No cause for alarm at this time.
