October 23, 2012 - The True Cause of Earthquakes, Volcanoes & Tsunamis: The map above, reflects over 2,000 years of earthquake and volcanic activity around the “Ring of Fire,” and other related Earth tectonic plates (roughly from 2 AD to 2012 AD). The colored circles, represent earthquakes, triangles volcanic eruptions, squares landslides and “?” tsunamis with unknown causes. The colors indicate strength. From strongest to weakest they are red, yellow, purple, orange and the weakest are white. The light dashed lines are areas of significant tsunamis. Therefore, this map captures the entire 2,000 year history of earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis!
Until the 1990′s, prevailing explanations about what causes earthquakes and volcanoes (and the subsequent Tsunamis) was plate tectonics; or the movement of massive slabs of Earth’s crust. It was thought that the mid-Atlantic Ridge (and other “spreading” plate boundaries) pushed these massive slabs of crust (called tectonic plates) into deep trenches. The grinding of plates under each other – - caused earthquakes. The heat generated caused volcanoes. The earthquakes and volcanoes (and sometimes huge landslides) caused tsunamis. In the late 20th century it was discovered that subduction, or one plate diving under another, plays a more fundamental role than seafloor spreading in shaping the earth’s features and running the plate tectonic machinery. The gravity controlled sinking of cold, denser oceanic slabs into the subduction zone (called “Slab Pull”) dragged the rest of the plate along with it. Thus, the true cause of earthquakes is gravity induced Slab Pull, and not sea floor spreading at plate boundaries.
