September 4, 2012 - Large Earthquakes versus the Origin of the English Days of the Week: The chart above reflects which day of the week 345 large earthquakes occurred on, from 1973 to 2012. These were earthquakes greater than or equal to 7.0 in magnitude. With a population that big (345 events), you would think that the bars would be about the same height. However, Wednesday clearly is the top day for large earthquakes, followed by Sunday, Friday and Saturday. The East Honshu Japan 2011 quake occurred on a Friday and the Sumatra mega-quake in 2004 happened on a Sunday.
From ancient times, each day of the week was assigned a planetary ruler, the Sun or Moon; because these were the seven heavenly bodies that they could see with the naked eye. The names of the days of the week originated from both Norse and Latin names. Sunday comes from the Norse Sol and Latin Solis. Monday from the Norse Mani and Latin Lunae. Tuesday Tyr and Martis, Wednesdays Odin and Mercurii, Thursday Thor and Jovis, Friday Frey and Veneris and Saturday from Saturni.
For whatever reason, you’re safest on a Thursday, with the riskiest day being Wednesday.

Great finding. It’s almost uncanny that the Costa Rica EQ just now occurred on a Wednesday.
