July 29, 2012 – - Why We Have Earthquake and Volcanoes: (A) Radiating heat from the core causes convection currents in the mantle of the earth. (B) These convection currents push and pull on the tectonic plates, causing the plates to move relative to each other. Most tsunamis are caused by earthquakes and, sometimes, by volcanoes and undersea landslides. The motions of the convection currents, deep within the Earth; and the tectonic plates on the surface of the World, are shown by arrows. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (shown between Africa and North and South America) is a divergent or spreading fault line, stretching vertically across the globe. This spreading puts pressure on the Pacific Plate, characterized as “The Ring of Fire.”
