June 19, 2012 - A 6.0 Magnitude Quake Struck the Western Aleutian Islands – Alaska: In the second quake greater than 5.0 to hit the U.S. today, a 6.0 magnitude tremor struck 550 miles east of the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula. Only two hours and sixteen minutes ago, a 5.1 magnitude tremor hit of the east coast of Oregon; in the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate complex.
The Alaskan quake struck at a depth of 21 kilometers (13 miles) and was not expected to produce a tsunami, according to the USGS. It was 6:56AM at the epicenter, 11:56AM in New York, 10:56AM in Chicago, 9:56AM in Denver and 8:56AM in Los Angeles.
The tremor was 74 miles WNW of Attu Station, Alaska; 538 miles east of Petropaulojsk-Kamchatskiy, Russia; 548 miles east of Yelizovo, Russia; and 549 miles east of Vilyuchinsk, Russia.
