March 26, 2012 - A 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Struck the Northern Portion of the East Pacific Rise: The 6.0 magnitude tremor occurred at 11:12AM near the epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). The quake was not expected to produce a tsunami. It was 2:12PM in New York, 1:12PM in Chicago, 12:12PM in Denver and 11:12AM in Los Angeles.
The tremor was 352 miles east of Clipperton Island, 535 miles SSW of Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico and 712 miles SSW of Mexico City (see map).
Powerful earthquakes can strike in the North American region. The Port-Au-Prince 7.0 magnitude quake of January 12, 2010 killed 222,570, injured 300,000, cost an estimated $8 billion dollars, destroyed 97,295 houses and damaged an additional 188,385 more.
